The 43rd Annual World Series of Poker was held at the Rio-All Suite Hotel & Casino and saw an increase to 61 scheduled events and included the additions of a re-entry tournament, an ante-only tournament, a mixed-max tournament, and a four-handed tournament. It was also the first year of the $1 million buy-in Big One for One Drop that saw Antonio Esfandiari win over $18.3 million in prize money. The November Nine concept continued - but played out at the end of October - as the title was kept on home soil when Greg Merson won the $8.5 million first-place prize and also the WSOP Player of the Year.
